Not Your Average Sandalwood
Sandalwood is a class of woods from trees in the genus Santalum. The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades. Sandalwood is the second most expensive wood in the world, right after African Blackwood. Both the wood and the oil produce a distinctive fragrance that has been highly valued for centuries. Consequently, species of these slow-growing trees have suffered over-harvesting in the past century.
Though there are many varieties of sandalwood grown around the world, it is said that sandalwood from the mountains near Mysore, India in the state of Karnataka is the highest quality. It is from these forests that the sandalwood we use is sustainably sourced through government licensed channels. Sandalwood trees in India, Pakistan, and Nepal are government-owned and their harvest is controlled in order to maintain healthy sandalwood populations and limit over-harvesting.
Indian sandalwood (Santalum album) naturally grown takes more than 30 years of growth before they are ready to be harvested. Our beads are sourced from the heart of the tree and the raw unfinished wood can cost as much as $100 per kilogram. Our beads are sustainably produced by our supplier in Jaipur, Rajasthan and can even cost more than some of our most precious stone beads we use in our Lovetree Co. mala designs.
Besides our materials being of the highest quality, all our sandalwood malas are handmade by women who were formally disenfranchised and unemployable. They have been empowered through an economic development and women empowerment program in Goa, India. Our sandalwood mala necklaces are made of the soothing and fragrant wood from south India. In aromatherapy practice sandalwood is used to stay in the present moment and it is said to attract positive subtle vibrations, bring clear perception, promote tranquility and a positive frame of mind.
